It's first title was Bringer. According to Till in the documentary ACHTUNG! WIR KOMMEN. Und Wir Kriegen Euch Alle, Flake came up with that name. The name is still being used to this date by the band and its crew, making appearances on printed setlists.

Before the band made a finished version of the song for Herzeleid album, the song had completely different lyrics in the verses. Each verse was a repetition of one line for three times before being closed by Am Fels hängt der Prophet. It also lacked the Rammstein! chants.

The final lyrics made their first known appearance on the infamous Saalfeld concert of the club tour in 1994, while the song still had a slightly different structure, repeating the bridge section Sex ist eine Schlacht, Liebe ist Krieg at the end. That part is taken from the song Fall by Orgasm Death Gimmick, where it was sung in English as Sex is a battle, love is a war. The song features various sound effects from the 1993 video game Doom, such as the screams of the titular character, Doom Guy, and the reloading sound of a shotgun.

Despite being the first song on Herzeleid, it never opened any show to date, but instead was a closer song for most of its performances. Most notably closing every main set portion of all known shows during the Herzeleid tour cycle, it began closing the first encore or overall setlist of Sehnsucht era concerts. The song made rare appearances during the year of 2001, again closing the main set portion. A very notable exception was the performance in Mexico City (04.08.2001), where it was added ad-hoc as last song, which also was the last performance for 10 years. It was brought back for the Made in Germany tour where it broke the habit of being a closer song, when it was in the middle slot of the first encore before becoming the second song of every setlist for the remainder of the whole era.

In terms of live stunts, the song is mostly recognizable by the sparkling gloves which was a staple ever since the Herzeleid tour. Additionally, most performances until 2001 included a flamethrower being shot over the crowd during the iconic keyboard outro that Flake provided.

Der Meister

Der Meister is one of the songs that didn't occur many changes in structure or lyrics before getting recorded for Herzeleid. Besides being the second on the album it was also the second track on the Seemann single. It is to be assumed that the song was intended as double A-side single, due to a promo CD of said single titled Seemann / Der Meister and the discovery of an unreleased remix by Milch of the song on an internal DAT tape, given that Der Meister was featured as the second track and Seemann got a remix on it as well as the timeframe of the remix production. It's not known why the remix wasn't released.

The song features samples of a car drifting and crashing.

Der Meister was a live staple since the Club tour, being featured in the early set portion as third or fourth song and moved down on the set for early Sehnsucht era shows, before being omitted when the bigger production of the Sehnsucht headline tour started making its last appearance on 30 August 1997. The song's live performance featured a microphone stand being destroyed, when Till would grab and smash it on the ground before snapping it in half and throwing it away.

Weißes Fleisch

It was one of the first songs the band wrote together. The very first version had English lyrics and was called White Flesh. If it was on the 4-track demo tape, which the band sent out to the Metrobeat Contest is not known. After the band switched to German, the working title for the song was Fleisch, although being titled Weißes Fleisch on all demo tapes following that change.

The demo has the guitar riff played throughout the entire verses, and there are only slight lyrical changes, omitting Dein weißes Fleisch wird mein Schafott; In meinem Himmel gibt es keinen Gott. The song is also included on the 9-track promotional tape, which included rough mixes and finished mixes of different album tracks, but it's unknown in what version out of both mixes.

Trivia about the spelling of the title: While the tracklist spells the song with ss, the correct German spelling is with ß like in the booklet. ß has been used as equivalent to the ss digraph, but had no official capital form until 2017; which is the reason why ss was used frequently, to avoid issues within modern and foremost international typography.

While some editions the lyrics in the booklet were translated into French, some German first pressings of the album had the words Schulhof (schoolyard) and töten (to kill) beeped during the first verse or blacked out in the booklet. There was no visual difference between the censored and uncensored version of the album. After closer inspection of the beeped version's audio, tiny skips can be discovered just before the beeps occur as well as before other words that could be seen as explicit within the context.

There's also an early poem from which the lyrical idea of the song hailed that was released in the Rammstein book. The poem itself was reworked into the poem Nele from Messer.

The song was frequently extended during live performances, reaching its peak in early 1996, when supporting act DJ Kom joined forces during the bridge, providing additional beats and samples, making the performance last barely under ten minutes. The intro saw extensions affect the build-up tension until the main riff would kick in, while the longer bridge after the guitar solo served as room for Flake's well-known crazy dancing stunt.

Its slot within the setlist was locked in the middle of the main set for the whole Herzeleid era. Early 1997 dates would use it within the encore, before omitting it completely for the festival run of the tour. It came back for the headline tour as third or fourth song and remained there for the rest of the Sehnsucht tour cycle. The song went on to serve as introduction to the old songs part of Mutter tour setlists, where it was almost always present. After being absent during the Reise, Reise tour, it made its comeback during the Liebe ist für alle da tour where it was the fifth song, except for festival sets excluding it altogether.

Asche zu Asche

Created under working title Asche, this song was likely one of the last songs to be recorded for the album, as it does not appear to have been played in 1994, unlike the other songs on the album. It's found on the 9-track promo tape with no further indication on it being either a rough or finished mix.

The line Das Schwesterlein ertrinkt im Gin taken from Till's poem Asche zu Asche off the book Rammstein, was changed into Die Stiefmama ertrinkt im Gin and re-used in the demo version of the song Spiel mit mir played live at some shows in the middle of 1996.

A MIDI demo using orchestral sounds circulated along with the leak of demos from the Liebe ist für alle da session. Its purpose is entirely unknown.

The song likely debuted in 1995 only, making appearances on the setlist mostly right after Weißes Fleisch or before Seemann, tieing in with the album's tracklist order. This position was favored due to the extended outro of Asche zu Asche evolving into a soft drum pattern before the extended synth intro from Seemann would join the soundscape. Seemann got ultimately replaced by other songs throughout the Sehnsucht tour, yet Asche zu Asche kept the extended outro. Mutter era saw the song locked between Sehnsucht, later Weißes Fleisch and Du hast. The song was first absent from Reise, Reise tour and was added to the setlist for the Summer leg. It was performed in 2009 only for a couple times to replace the then-censored Ich tu dir weh, carrying the whole bathtub stunt and an extended outro. The regular comeback happened during the Made in Germany tour, where it was locked as fifth song inbetween Sehnsucht and Feuer frei!. This time it carried a new extended outro, consisting of the main riff being played for longer along with the whole band continuing. During the regular performances from all tour cycles the song's stunt performance featured heavy smoke from smokebombs as well as the microphone stands from each of both guitarists getting ignited during the bridge until they wear out at the end of the final chorus.

Seemann

Seemann is named Matrose or Der Seeman on different demo tapes. Despite the different naming, all demo tapes include the same version of the song, with slight mixing differences. The biggest change done to it in the process of producing the album was changing the song's structure; the demo had all verses back to back before ending with several repetitions of the chorus lines, and some whistling as well. It was also part of the 9-track promo tape with its rough mixes / mixes tracklist. On Herzeleid, the song has Emanuel Fialik, their manager at the time credited for additional production.

Seemann became Rammstein's second single on 8 January 1996, accompanied by a music video shot by Laszlo Kadar. The video uses a shorter edit of the song, cutting the first chorus in half. Initially, it was likely intended to be a double A-side single together with Der Meister, which is evident by a promo CD titled Seemann / Der Meister and the existence of a remix for each song. A remix, called Rammstein in the House is a full-on house remix done by Timewriter and includes very few elements of Seemann, namely the bird chirping sample and the intro bassline which appear in the bridge only.

By the nature of being a ballad, the song got included as part of the piano renditions compilation "Klavier".

The live shows had Seemann put within the encore for the early shows, and being kept pretty much in the middle of the main set later on, where it could serve as calmer break for both band and audience. It would remain there until the autumn 1997 headline tour, because both Wilder Wein and Klavier claimed said calm break within the setlist, making Seemann move to the second encore, ultimately closing the concert. After that tour leg, that change reverted back to the middle position for the remainder of the tour, except where shows were quite short in playtime. Exceptionally, the song closed the show again on the German dates chosen to be recorded for Live aus Berlin. Seemann got brought back for the first batch of LIFAD tour dates to open the second encore, before getting kicked. Up until then, Flake used to ride in a boat on top of the crowd. It returned in 2016 for the whole run of dates up to New Year's Eve 2019 in Mexico. Flake was now simply offstage during most of the song until before the last chorus.

Du riechst so gut

The demo of the song, called Der Riecher is found on two known demo tape variations only and has not many differences to its album counterpart in structure or lyrics. Most notable being Der Wahnsinn, Ich finde dich and Jetzt hab ich dich said by Till instead of Richard, the lack of synth bass in the verses of the demo version and the extended instrumental part before the third verse.

The single for Du riechst so gut was Rammstein's first official release. It was released in two versions; a promo single and a retail version. Both were different; the promo has a longer edit of Du riechst so gut, that extends the final chorus into a fadeout, and the retail version of the single had the album version despite it being labeled as single version like on the promo disc. Additionally the retail single carried a remix done by Project Pitchfork, the band Rammstein opened for shortly after.

The music video directed by Emanuel Fialik and destined to support the single release, uses a way shorter edit of the song. Although the vast usage of concept surrounding the song's theme was applied to the clip as well, it got hold back and only released on the reboot of a Du riechst so gut single three years later, tentatively called Du riechst so gut '98. The release had an extensive tracklist of eight tracks: the 1998 remaster and edit of the original song and seven remixes, most of them done by members of Bobo in White Wooden Houses or KMFDM. Notably the Sascha Moser remix exclusively showcases vocals done by Bobo on the chorus of the song. Of course, the 1998 single got its own music video, too, directed by Philipp Stölzl. Due to the reboot and its inclusion as bonus track on some editions of the second album Sehnsucht, the song got the desired recognition and became a hit among the fans, making it an obvious choice for the best-of album, Made in Germany from 2011. Therefore the song got edited and remastered once more for this release.

Thanks to its hit status, the song got played live the most frequently out of all Herzeleid songs. During the Herzeleid era it was usually performed within the last batch of songs, mostly as encore closer. Sehnsucht era placed it consistently before Du hast, no matter if that pairing was put early or late within the main set. The Mutter era simply ignored the song altogether. It got played right before Du hast again for all of the Reise, Reise tour dates. The song was omitted on setlists of the Liebe ist für alle da tour, until the title song got kicked and switched for it in March 2010, placing it before Benzin. It would be kept that way for the rest of the tour. The Made in Germany setlists kept the song locked in between Mein Teil and Links 2-3-4 until the 2013 run, where it was mostly played before Benzin again. It returned for the next era between Ich tu dir weh and Mein Herz brennt. During the Festival Tour 2016 Richard sang You sexy motherfucker instead of Der Wahnsinn in honor of then recently deceased Prince. Finally, the song got performed during the 2019 stadium tour between Ausländer and Pussy. The effects for this song usually consist of the sparkling arc handled by Till in the intro and the flare arms on one arm of the guitarists each for the solo. The Made in Germany tour occasionally saw burning guitars on the solo, but ultimately got replaced by the flares again.

Das alte Leid

The working title for this song was Hallo Hallo. When Till wanted to sing lyrics for the song for the first time on the band's demo tape, he said Hallo, hallo in the beginning, just to check if he was audible. This recorded line was kept and used before the song, which is where the demo name of the song comes from. Before the chorus is a short break which the band wanted to fill with something. They just wanted Till to scream anything that came to his mind. So he just started screaming Ich will ficken! (I want to fuck). Initially he'd scream it before every chorus, but they thought it to be too explicit, so they kept it only once in the song.

Das alte Leid is the song with the most amount of known demo variations to date. It has been used to promote a show on a rock radio station in 1994, which has been the purpose of the first tape it's found on: the 5-track demo; there it was presumably mislabeled as Das alte Lied. This might have been the first time ever Rammstein music was broadcasted somewhere. The most familiar version of the demo hails from the iconic 6-track demo 3, where it fades out during the last chorus and was called Hallo Hallo. It was used like that on more tapes. However, the first commercial usage of a Das alte Leid demo, which was once more a different version on the New Industries sampler. The mysterious 9-track promo tape also had Das alte Leid on its tracklist and finally the first public release from Rammstein, the Du riechst so gut promo single had a Hallo Hallo demo as b-side instead of Wollt ihr das Bett in Flammen sehen?

The seventh song of Herzeleid got opposed to its extensive demo variations history a rather short lifespan onstage, because it never got carried past the Herzeleid era. After it started to be introduced with the Hallo Hallo vocals by Till, Flake would soon sample it instead. Another year later this line was dropped so the intro could be extended further, consisting only of Schneider and Flake playing to the beat. The most interesting and rather unknown fact was the show effect that got used: the squirting dildo. This would later become the recurring stunt for Bück dich instead. At some shows in 1996 the dildo would sparkle a firework fountain. The song was last seen onstage on the second-to-last show of the Herzeleid tour, making it likely to have been performed on the show after as well, but not after that tour cycle, making it Rammstein's first regular song to retire from live performances.

The word "Bohne" actually means bean. The two lines that begin the two verses that contain it are referring to life growing out of a bean (and into the light or nothingness). Seed sounds much better in English though.

Heirate mich

The working title for this song was Kinski because the song uses a riff from the Magdalene Keibel Combo song Klaus Kinski. According to the GEMA database, another working title was Heirate mich in Berlin. The song was played at the band's early shows in 1994. The song had a different structure. It didn't feature any breaks inbetween where the final version's chorus was, and didn't have a chorus chanting Heirate Mich! Hei! Hei! Hei! yet, instead the Dort bei den Glocken verbring ich die Nacht (…) pre-chorus served as a chorus. It also featured an extensive drum part from Schneider as well as car alarm samples in the second part and at the end of the song. The guitar solo and a final chorus appered after So nehm ich was noch übrig ist (…) verse which ended the song on the album. Another minor difference is that the song featured slightly different guitar riffs for the main portion of the song, as well as the chorus.

The song's earliest known studio version is only found on the 9-track promo tape, that includes mixes and rough mixes without specification on which songs are one of both. Two years after the album's release, it would play a key role in the band's success in the US, when it was used in the movie Lost Highway and ultimately its soundtrack too, both using an abridged, edited version omitting some repetitions of the main riff as well as everything from the guitar solo onwards.

This prominent exposure of the track led to its underground hit status. The song saw many simple extensions and changes to both the intro and outro. A series of effects, mostly using exploding dolls would emphasize the drum hits in the intro as well as echoing Till's vocals from his outro yell. A new addition in 1997 was the extended bridge, repeating Heirate mich several times, while Till walked on his knees to various band members on stage. Only during the headline tour in autumn 1997, the intro got cut and an extension using guitars faded into Wollt ihr das Bett in Flammen sehen?. When performing at the Big Day Out Festival in 2001, Paul would now ride the inflatable boat normally used during Seemann on prior tour legs, during the extended bridge and the outro was replaced by an additional chorus. The song made appearances during the North American leg of the Mutter tour, before disappearing for 18 years! It got brought back during the 2019 Stadium tour, with the whole song structure as well as the extended bridge.

Herzeleid

The basic riff of the song comes from an unreleased Feeling B song, it also appeared in John, the first track of the Magdalene Keibel Combo album Live im HDJT. The lyrics for the song were sourced from a poem which Till found in his grandmother's attic. The poem is often used as a wedding vow. Initially, the lyrics were longer than on the album version and a second verse was sung during early performances of the song. Said verse would later be found in the Rammstein book by Gert Hof.

During 1994 performances, the song had slightly different lyrics, as well as a slightly different structure. The 1995 and 1996 performances were identical; the song was now shorter, but still retained the same buildup intro as the 1994 performances. No pyrotechnics or stage acts were used during the song's performance. Till would instead make use of arm gestures after every word he sung.

From September to October 1997, the song would be performed after Spiel mit mir and Till would continue wearing the stage outfit for that song during Herzeleid, albeit without the usual laser goggles. Till also no longer screams during the performance. The Eins scream was replaced with Till saying the word normally followed by an echoing synth, and the Herzeleid screams would use playback. In August 1998, the song was performed three times in the usual 1997 way, with the Spiel mit mir outfit and playback screams.

Herzeleid was one of the songs already retracted from setlists during the early Sehnsucht era, making last appearances during the Live aus Berlin concerts.

Laichzeit

This song hasn't gotten much known about its pre-album existence either, besides existing on the 9-track promo tape. It featured a slightly different structure, riffs and lyrics on both known 1994 concerts, though. This version of the song had a much longer synth buildup intro before the band joined in.

In December 1995, a drum buildup intro was played before Flake would join in, the guitarists would follow. Till would hit his knee during the instrumental breaks in between the verses, sometimes in his signature Till-hammer style, but sometimes whilst just standing up as well. When nearing the end of the song, the guitarists would play the same riff, but slower each time.

When performed at festivals, Till would be present at the center of the stage from the beginning of the intro, and when Flake started his keyboard intro, he would launch two fireworks that were attached to his arms. Till would also move his arms corresponding to the synths at the start of the song before he started singing. On September 27, some explosions went off under grates on the stage, causing flames to burst out of them after the intro was played.

During Sehnsucht tour, the song's performance remained the same as before, without any special effects. Before Du riechst so gut got to keep the sparkling bow effect, Till used it on the Laichzeit intro. in 1998, the song made use of a confetti explosion when the main riff kicked the song off.

Laichzeit was last played on January 18, 2001.

Rammstein

The self-titled song was the first one the whole band wrote together. It's also the only song that the band wrote lyrics together as a band. The lyrics were written in Till's village pub on a bar check. The band members imagined if they were on the scene of the 1988 airshow disaster at the Ramstein base. We visualized everything practically in images, each of us made a draft and suddenly, the lyrics were ready. said Schneider.

The song had various lengths on different demo tapes. The most wide-spread version came off the 6 Track Demo 3, which was preliminary cut during the middle of the third verse. Another cut version appeared on 6-Track Demo 2, this time cut after the third verse. A full version of the demo appeared on the band's self-released demo tape as well as on Time for a Cut, a Metal Hammer sampler compilation from 1995, which promoted the then rather unknown band. The demo version had a very short intro, beginning only with a jet engine, as opposed to the famous synth intro known from the album version. The demo also had the guitar solo at the end of the song, that faded out. The album version had the first guitar solo after the third verse, which wasn't the case in the demo. Also, the demo version was one minute longer than the album version. The lyrics remained the same.

The song uses an airplane engine sound sample, which was previously used in Feeling B's Slamersong.

Two years after the album's release, it would play a key role in the band's success in the US, when it was used in the movie Lost Highway and ultimately its soundtrack too. Just like Heirate mich, the soundtrack included an edited and abridged version of the song.

Altough never released as a standalone single, the song was released on the Engel single in 1997. The video for the song is a mix of concert footage from Berlin Arena 1996 and movie scenes from Lost Highway and was released during early 1997.

Rammstein's performances would always open with this song until 1997 with by far the most iconic stageact known to the public, even to people outside the fandom. Usually consisting of an inflammable coat, it made actually usage of two firework fountains before the coat in 1994 with Till wearing a Schlitzbrille, special sun protection goggles with tiny vision slots, said to have been made for alpine hunters. When the coat was first used it consisted only of a black suit top with chainmill-like sleeves, from which only the right one was lit on fire. The coat got replaced in late 1996 by a full-length version, including a longer backside and a collar, which enhanced the flammable surface. Beginning with 1997, the song would open the encore and itself got performed with a remixed portion, using the Eskimos & Egypt version after the first verse, most known from the Bizarre 1997 proshot (video below). Dropping the remix part for the headline tour in 1997, the song would get performed on a moving platform designed like a boxing ring with Till wearing laserpointer goggles. Occasionally, Flake joined him to roast sausages on his burning back. Both Live aus Berlin concerts featured an elevator within the main stage from which Till would arise with the ignited coat. The band cranked it up a notch during the "Mutter" tour where Till would perform the song while wearing a flameproof mask resembling his own face, as well as a flameproof suit underneath the coat. After the song's second verse, Till would catch fire and Flake would come to his aid with a fire extinguisher. However, Flake's extinguisher would be filled with flammable powder, making the fire even worse. Till would get down on the ground where crewmembers would come to actually put out the fire. The entire performance would be stopped during this stunt, for a more dramatic effect. Till would eventually stand up, revealing his protective clothing and mask to the audience before finishing the song. The act was dropped because it would shock the audience too much and people did not know how to react. The coat was dropped from the Reise, Reise tour on, where Till sported an exoskeleton with big flamethrowers mounted on the arms. The song then disappeared until 2013, where its intro made an appearance before Bück dich, teasing the fans. For this occasion flamethrower guitars were used for the first time. The full song finally had its comeback during the 2019 Stadium tour with Till now wearing a flamethrower backpack, which shoots in nine directions all around his back. The song structure was slighty altered, replacing the third verse with a second guitar solo after a new break.

Jeder Lacht

Jeder lacht is an unreleased song by Rammstein. It's also one of the band's first written songs. It was recorded by the band in Knaack club and released on the 5-Track Demo and the 6-Track Demo 1 tapes. The song was played notably slower on the demo tape than during the live performances. Its first three lines were later re-used in the chorus of the song Adios. Also, the first part of the guitar solo in this song bears resemblance to the guitar solo in Adios. The song has a 4:00 length, but the entry in GEMA database showed the song clocking in at 4:30. It isn't known if an alternative version of the song exists, or if this is an error.

The live played version had a minor differences in lyrics, most notably the lack of Tier! chanting in the chorus, probably due to a song of the same name. The song was played live during 1994 (probably later too, but many setlists are unkown), being the third song on the setlist, played after Tier 94 and before Der Meister. The first known time it was played was on 2 June 1994 at Tacheles in Berlin and the last known time on New Year's Eve 1994 in Saalfeld. Nothing is known about any live stunts for Jeder lacht.

Schwarzes Glas

Schwarzes Glas is an unreleased song by Rammstein. The most well-known demo version of the song was featured on the 6-Track Demo 3 tape, which fades out during the guitar solo (4:07). The song was also featured on earlier demo tapes: 3-Track Demo 1/ and 6-Track Demo 2, and is a different version of the song. It's the full version of the song, recorded in a live-studio setting similar to Feuerräder and therefore played faster. Richard's vocals can be heard during the Schwarzes Glas lines.

The guitar riff played during the verses bears strong resemblance to the main riff of Der Meister.

Schwarzes Glas was played only four known times. The first known time it was played was on 27 August 1994 in Rostock, its performance was identical to the early demo tapes version. The song closed the band's setlist. The song was absent from the known dates of the Herzeleid Tour in 1995. The song returned on the autumn leg of the 1996 Herzeleid Tour, where it's known that it was performed on the 10 November 1996 in Vienna and a day later in Magdeburg. This version, however, had guitar riffs that resembled more of Eifersucht, released a year later on Sehnsucht. Because of that it's suspected that the band worked further on the song to include it on their second album, but for some reason it was scrapped.

Nothing is known about this song. It is unclear whether it is an unknown unreleased song or just a working title of some known song.

The only time it was played live was in Lobenstein on 15 December 1995.

Tiefer gelegt

Tiefer gelegt is an unreleased song by Rammstein. The title of the song translates to set lower and is not related to its lyrics. According to Flake in his second book, Rammstein called it like that because the guitars are tuned down to Drop D in this song. The song existed before Flake joined the band, but after they sent out the first 4-Track Demo with English versions of the songs. Since not much is known about this track, it could very well be just another name of a known song.

The only known time it was played was on 15 December 1995 in Lobenstein.

Tier 1994

Tier (1994) is an unreleased song by Rammstein, it's also one of the band's first written songs, which was confirmed by Flake in an interview. Not much is known about the song, because of its short lifespan on the band's early concerts.

It was played only three known times. The first known time it was played was on 27 August 1994 in Rostock. It was the second song the band played live after Rammstein and before Jeder lacht. The song's existence was first discovered by fans due to a bootleg recording from the iconic show in Saalfeld. During its live performance, Flake sat in a metal cage with a piece of cloth hanging over it that got burned during the song.

The song has been known to fans by Biest for many years, since the correct name of the song was not known to the person who leaked the bootleg. The confirmation of the correct name comes from another band's member which played in support of Rammstein once in 1994 and remembers the band talking about the song backstage.

Unknown Instrumental

The unknown instrumental is an unreleased song by Rammstein. It was included on a demo tape which was made personally by Richard and given to one of his friends. According to Richard, he recorded the song for a wedding. Since the tape had no tracklist, the name of the instrumental remains unknown. Nothing is known about the song, other than its recording.

Most of the clean guitar lines in this song were later re-used in the song Mutter as well as the baby sample, which is longer in the instrumental. Further, there's also a guitar solo resembling parts of the one from the Emigrate song We Are Together.
